Obituary of John Thomas Miller

John Thomas Miller, 90, husband of Erma Lee Capps Miller, quietly went to be with his heavenly father, on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, after a courageously fought battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on March 17, 1932, in Georgetown County, he was a son of the late Girley Sylvester Miller and the late Kathrine Rose Langel Miller. Mr. Miller was born and raised on a farm in Pleasant Hill near Hemingway, SC. As one of 4 boys and 2 girls on a small farm, he had many adventures hunting and fishing and working the fields of their farm. Family members surrounded him in this small community and he still fondly talked of his many friends, family members and the good old days. When duty called, he joined the US Army and the young farm boy was off to serve as a medic in the Korean War. Although the military took him to many areas in Korea, he was fortunate to return home and meet his wife, Erma, a registered nurse. They had two children, Johnny and Joyce, and raised them with a focus on education and the church. Mr. Miller was a member of First Baptist Church and had a great love for farming, fishing and gardening. John Thomas was proud to have been employed with International Paper and retired after 37 years with the company. He still would often run into fellow workers from IP at local restaurants and talk about their time together at the mill. Survivors include his wife of Georgetown; two children, Dr. John Anderson Miller (Kristi) of Georgetown and Joyce Elaine Conner (Bob) of Randleman, NC; four grandchildren, Cole Miller (Abigail) of Georgetown, Ryan Miller of Greenville, Conner Miller of Georgetown and John Andrew Miller of Virginia; two great grandchildren, Daniel Miller and Aurora Miller; one brother, Lloyd Miller of Pleasant Hill; two sisters, Rose Wall of Georgetown and Florrie Leland (Griffin) of Greenville; one sister-in-law, Shelby Miller of Georgetown; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lamar Miller and J.A. Miller. Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Friday, July 15, 2022 in the Center Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday at Ridgeway Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 219 Cleland St. Georgetown, SC 29440.
