Richard Glover Summey, 81, of West Columbia, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2024, in Pawleys Island. Born on March 14, 1943, in Hendersonville, NC. He was a son of the late Hicks Albert Summey and the late Rose Evelyn Huggins Summey of Finley Cove Road in Hendersonville, NC. After graduating from East Henderson High School in East Flat Rock, NC, he received degrees from Brevard College, East Tennessee State University and the University of Virginia. While at Brevard College, he lettered in three sports: basketball, track and cross country. Mr. Summey was a teacher, an elementary, middle and high school principal. He served as principal of Pine Ridge Middle School in West Columbia, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School in Columbia, SC, and retired as principal of Georgetown High School in 2001. He was passionate about his work as a principal and loved to see his students achieve in school and life. After he retired, he worked as a consultant with Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Publishing Co. Mr. Summey was an avid sports fan. He followed the University of North Carolina Tarheels basketball team since he was a teenager. He was also a follower of the South Carolina Gamecock football team. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include a daughter, Marla Rhett Moberly Meredith of Georgetown, who he loved dearly; two grandchildren, Cole Meredith and Carson Meredith both of Georgetown; a special, friend, Bob Davis of Lexington; one niece, Robin Hulsey; and one nephew, Scott Summey. He was preceded in death by a brother, H. M. Summey. Memorials may be made to Valley Hill Baptist Church, 118 School Street, Hendersonville, NC 28739. Memorial services will be held at 6 PM, Friday, May 3, 2024, at First Baptist Church.
