Richard O’Neil “Roach” Mercer, 59, beloved husband of Carla Williams Mercer, passed away Thursday, February 9, 2017 at Tidelands Community Hospice House.
Born on September 12, 1957, in Norfolk, VA, he was a son of Donald O. Mercer and the late Shirley Jones Mercer. Mr. Mercer was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and served as a Certified Lay Minister. He was South Carolina National Guard veteran and a member and area coordinator with the Coastal ABATE chapter. Mr. Mercer was the owner and operator of Mercer’s Welding and Muffler. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, hunting, fishing, playing the guitar and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife and father of Georgetown; one son, Richard O’Neil “Ricky” Mercer (Amy) of Georgetown; three step children, Cynthia Moseley of Camden, Robert Ward (Angel) of Georgetown and Benjamin Ward of Georgetown; five grandchildren, Christopher Todd, Brycen Moseley, Ashbee Moseley, Gage Coleman and Kherington Mercer; two sisters, Julie Shila (Sonny) of Marion and Tammy Swails (Lindy) of Georgetown; three brothers, Darrell “Bird” Mercer (Rebecca) of Georgetown, Donald “Wino” Mercer of Georgetown and Jeffrey Mercer of Marion; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ellis Matthew Mercer; and one brother, Berry “Greg” Mercer.
A graveside service will be held at 2 PM Sunday, February 12, 2017 in the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Saturday at Bethel United Methodist Church.
