Matthew S. Howard

1963 — January 19, 2024

Matthew S. Howard of Georgetown, S.C., passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 19, 2024. He was the beloved partner of Regina H. Nascimento. Matthew was born in Haverhill, MA on March 16, 1963, the son of the late Richard and Joan (Preble) Howard. He spent his early years in Haverhill, MA, graduating from Haverhill High School in 1981. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts Lowell with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. Matthew had a strong work ethic and dedicated many years working in the medical malpractice insurance industry. Matthew found solace and joy in the mountains, relishing the tranquility that hiking brought into his life. Matthew found comfort and happiness in spending time with his partner, Regina, on the shores of Plum Island. Additionally, he embraced the exhilaration of biking and reveled in all things physical, cultivating a passion for an active and vibrant lifestyle. These pursuits reflected his zest for life and appreciation for the outdoors. Matthew was deeply connected to his spiritual journey. His spiritual convictions were evident in the way he navigated challenges, found peace in moments of reflection, and approached relationships with empathy and compassion. A passion for football dominated Matt’s school years – playing for Bradford’s Hamel Leather in the Haverhill YMCA League. He followed a family tradition joining in the fifth grade for a league that took only seventh and eighth graders. He played four years for the Haverhill Hillies, being described as “tough as a bag of nails.” And that he was. When his playing days were behind him, his definition of a great day was the pre-CFP New Year’s Day, when he gathered his brothers around him and spent the entire day watching all the bowl games. In addition to his loving partner of twelve years, Matthew leaves behind his three children: Alison, Molly, and Nathaniel Howard. Matthew’s love for his three children was unwavering and profound. He created cherished memories by taking them on vacations all over, fostering a sense of adventure and togetherness. Beyond the picturesque moments, Matthew consistently provided unwavering support, offering advice and guidance whenever his children needed it. His love was unconditional, characterized by a lack of judgment towards his children, ensuring that they always felt safe and accepted. Matthew’s love extended beyond human connections, as his cherished cats held a special place in his heart akin to his children. Matthew is survived by his brother, Chris Howard, his wife Marianne of Portland, Maine, and the mother of his children, Margo DeFazio of Haverhill, MA. He also leaves behind his nephews, Andrew, Tanner, Jeremy, and his niece Dania, and many dear friends whom he held close in his heart. Matthew was predeceased by his son, Kevin Howard whom he held dear in his heart for his entire life; as well as his beloved siblings, Andrew, Geoffrey, Martha, and Philip. In lieu of calling hours and a traditional funeral, Matthew’s children will honor his wishes with a private memorial on top of Mount Chocorua. In Matthew’s words, “Ever Forward”. Online condolences may be left at www.ridgewayfh.com Ridgeway Funeral Home of Georgetown is in charge of the arrangements. (843) 485-4242
