Marilyn DeWitt Altman, 86, widow of Luther Lenair Altman, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2022, The Palmettos of Garden City.
Born on February 7, 1935, in Pamplico, she was a daughter of the late Cordie Whitehart DeWitt and the late Lenora Amanda James Huggins. Mrs. Altman was a graduate of the University of South Carolina where she received her bachelor’s degree in nursing. During her nursing career, Mrs. Altman served in many different capacities to include head nurse over the first recovery room at Georgetown Memorial Hospital, school nurse at Winyah High School as well as nurse coordinator for the Georgetown County School District. In 1966 she left nursing to become a second-grade school teacher at Maryville Elementary School but returned to her true passions of nursing in 1972.
Mrs. Altman had a great love for genealogy which led her to becoming a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) – Winyah Chapter. As a member of the DAR, Mrs. Altman held many positions and served on several committees that led her to becoming the chairman of the DAR SC State Regent Council. Mrs. Altman also served as a board member of the Tamassee DAR School for a number of years.
Mrs. Altman was a member of Duncan United Methodist Church where she was a former Sunday school teacher, former president of the United Methodist Women and served on several committees. Along with her love for genealogy, she also enjoyed gardening, reading and traveling. She was the essence of a true southern lady.
Survivors include one daughter, Rhonda A. Bornman (Joe) of Myrtle Beach; one grandson, Jerrod Bornman (Denise) of Myrtle Beach; a great grandchild, Jace Bornman; caregivers, Bertha and Bim Surratt of Georgetown; a brother-in-law, Johnny Cates of Dallas, TX; and four nieces, Charlotte Moore of Georgetown, Mandy Pegram of Murrells Inlet, Candy O’Neill of Dallas, TX and Cathy Peinado of Aubrey, TX.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sybil Bennett and Nora Jean Cates.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Monday, January 31, 2022, at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 3-5 PM Sunday at Ridgeway Funeral Home in Georgetown.
