Joyce Ann Martenies, 72, passed away Monday, November 21, 2022, at her home.
Ms. Martenies was born on April 4, 1950, in Kokomo, Indiana, a daughter to the late William Ashenfelter and the late Doris Self Ashenfelter. Ms. Martenies worked for the Georgetown County School District for 32 years. She spent most of her career at Waccamaw Elementary School in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, where she served as Senior Secretary and Bookkeeper. She had an excellent work ethic, knew every rule in the book, and followed those rules “to a T.” Joyce was known for her efficiency, attention to detail, and dedication. She watched so many young students learn and grow and often remembered them when they crossed her path as young adults. Ms. Joyce took much pride in her work and served GCSD well for several years.
In the later years of her career, Joyce began allowing students to affectionately refer to her as Ms. Joyce instead of Ms. Martenies. She truly loved nothing more than watching the students learn and grow and took great pride in remembering them when they crossed her path as young adults. Ms. Joyce will forever be known for her allegiance to her job and the district as a whole.
Survivors include two children, Kelly Craig (Phil) and Frank Martenies (Chandra); three grandchildren, Reed Craig, Olivia Craig, and Claire Martenies; two sisters, Sally Rutledge and Kim Ashenfelter; a brother, Gary Ashenfelter (Connie); and her beloved stepmother, Rebecca Ashenfelter.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Cheryl Schmidt.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2023 from 1 PM to 3 PM at Ridgeway Funeral Home.
