John Erie Benford, Sr., 81, husband of Jean Benford, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2025, at his home.
Born on May 8, 1943, on the family farm in Andrews, he was a son of the late Henry Agnes Benford and the late Reba Parsons Benford. Mr. Benford was a United States Army veteran, serving his country with honor and dignity. His commitment to service extended beyond the military, as he was an active member of Alcoholic Anonymous for over 30 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church, a passionate forester and was the owner of Hemingway Wood. Mr. Benford was a pioneer for the timber industry for over 40 years.
Mr. Benford cherished his family, and the time spent with them. He fondly remembered fishing trips with his mother, spending time at the family farm, affectionately known as the “Johnson Swamp Hilton”, a place not only that he was born and raised on, but a place that brought him solace, joy and a connection to his roots.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Benford of Pawleys Island; three children, Brian Benford (Cheryl) of Wilmington, Kim Dunn (Brad) of Georgetown and John Benford, Jr. (Ashley) of Georgetown; eight grandchildren, Bella Benford, Chase Benford, Jack Benford, Anna Dunn, Ava Dunn, Elle Moody, John "Trey" Benford, III and Scottie Benford; one brother, Henry "Buddy" Benford of Andrews; four sisters, Jenelle Nelson of Elgin, Clara Rutland of Covington, LA, Carolyn Wieteler (Leo) of the Netherlands and Margaret Green of Elgin; his beloved fur baby, Hagley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, James Benford, Phillip Benford and Michael Benford and one sister, Sybil Maxwell.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at First Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 1 PM to 2PM at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Samaritan’s Purse or Alzheimer’s Foundation.
