Herman Herbert “Herb” Bailey, Jr., 86, husband of Linda Cameron Bailey, passed away Monday, August 1, 2022 at Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Born on September 5, 1935, in Chester, PA, he was the son of the late Herman Herbert Bailey, Sr. and the late Clara Dutton Bailey. Mr. Bailey was a member of Georgetown Presbyterian Church and served in the US Marine Corps. After his time in the Marines, Mr. Bailey began his career in journalism with Channel 13 out of Florence and later was instrumental in starting Channel 4 in Charleston as a news anchor. His love for broadcasting led him to host radio stations as well as being the voice of the Winyah Gators, Georgetown Bulldogs and the Citadel Bulldogs. After many years of broadcasting, Mr. Bailey went on to work at Georgetown Steel Mill.
Mr. Bailey was one of the founders of the local Marine Corp League and was a member of the Iron Steel Association. He was a pilot and was the first director of the Spirit of 76 fly, into the Georgetown County Airport. With a busy schedule, Mr. Bailey found time to mentor to the youth through coaching youth sports in Georgetown. Mr. Bailey had a great love for the outdoors and enjoyed helping others and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of Georgetown; three children, Herman Herbert "Bert" Bailey, III (Patricia) of Summerville, Christopher Bailey of Georgetown and Melissa Bailey of Georgetown; three grandchildren, Brittany Stephens (Jarrad) of Niceville, FL, Cody Bailey of Georgetown and Lauren E. Blaine (Benton) of Charlotte two great grandchildren, Kherington Stephens and Emma Stephens; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Sandra Kendal and Randi Tate.
Inurnment will be at 5 PM Thursday, August 18, 2022, in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
