Fred Jones

1933 — November 4, 2023

(ANDREWS, SC) Frederick “Fred” Lee Jones, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully at Tidelands Hospital Georgetown on November 4th, 2023, at the age of 90 (if you know Fred, you know he liked to “round up”). Fred was born on December 22, 1933, in Premier, West Virginia to Marvin and Helen Jones. The oldest of 3 siblings, his family grew up in the coal camp and he attended Welch High School, where he was known for his keen interest in history. After graduating, Fred proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force and served a tour overseas in France, attaining the rank of Airman First Class. Upon returning from his tour of duty, Fred met the love of his life Melbie at a local fair and after a brief courtship they married February 15, 1957 and lived in Welch and Coalwood, West Virginia with Fred working at Appalachian Power and Melbie as a bookkeeper. In 1961, they welcomed their son James “Jimmy” and in 1963, daughter Cheri before moving to Andrews, South Carolina in 1967. Upon moving to Andrews following Fred and Melbie’s shared love of the beach, Fred found a rewarding career at General Telephone (now Verizon) as an installer / repairman and general jack-of-all-trades. His love for helping people and generosity was known by many and while Fred would never acknowledge it, he was a pillar in the community, most notably serving multiple terms on the Andrews Town Council and an Elder at Andrews Presbyterian Church, where he was the oldest member. Fred was a devoted family man and a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Melbie, of 66 years; his children, Jimmy (Cheryl), Cheri (Sherry); grandson, Taylor (Perrin); and great-granddaughter Leighton. Fred was a kind and compassionate man who always put others first. His proudest accomplishment was perhaps all the degrees, titles, and career accolades achieved by his family – all of which would have been impossible had Fred not forged a path. A true gentleman and a role model for all who knew him. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, daily morning walks, and perhaps the occasional cigar. He always approached everything with a smile on his face. Fred was always known for his keen sense of humor and quick wit. For all that knew him for any period, it is almost certain they know of a “Fred story” or two. Fred will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was a truly special man who touched the lives of many. The Jones family would like to thank all those who provided such thoughtful, compassionate care for him at Tidelands Hospital and those who have and continue to serve the family. The arrangement of services is to be announced by the family at a later time. The family asks for continued prayers for Fred’s wife Melbie as she recently entered Hospice care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Andrews Presbyterian Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.ridgewayfh.com Ridgeway Funeral Home of Georgetown is in charge of the arrangements. (843) 485-4242
