Brooks Mayer High, 78, passed away Friday, November 22, 2024, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born on April 20, 1946, in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Jacob Brooks Mayer and the late Lease Davis Mayer. Mrs. High, a member of Duncan Methodist Church, will be fondly remembered for her dedication and service as a former Sunday school teacher and choir member. She dedicated more than 25 years of her life to teaching at Kensington Elementary, where she left an indelible mark on her students and colleagues. Her passion for education and nurturing young minds was unparalleled.
Mrs. High had an immense love for animals, especially horses and dogs, which was evident through her involvement with various organizations. She volunteered countless hours with SC CARES, advocating for the welfare of animals. Additionally, she was an active member of the American Paint Horse Association and the ASPCA. One of Mrs. High's greatest joys was watching her beloved granddaughter participate in horse shows. Her eyes would light up with pride as she watched her granddaughter ride, sharing her passion for horses.
Outside of her professional and volunteer commitments, Mrs. High found solace and joy in the simple beauty of nature. She was an avid seashell collector, bird watcher and often enjoyed riding on the boat. She also had a great love for watching the sun rise on the beach and golden retrievers.
Survivors include two children, Leslie High Morris (Michael) of Conway and John A. "Jay" High, II of Georgetown; three grandchildren, Dr. Elizabeth Brooks High of Charleston, John A. "Alex" High, III of Georgetown and Cody Charles Kaufman of Conway; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, John A. High, Sr.; a granddaughter, Melody K. Morris; and a brother, Charles Thompson "Tommy" Mayer.
